Plot Synopsis: This immensely popular musical stars French diva Catherine Deneauve, as well as a number of other talented French actresses including Isabelle Huppert and Fanny Ardant. Like George Cukor's "The Women", upon which this film was partly inspired, the film is absent of any on-screen male characters. The eight women of the title are trapped in a mansion in the French countryside where they are forced to unravel the mystery of who stabbed the family's patriarch. Deneuve plays Gaby, the wealthy woman whose husband has been murdered. All are suspects in the murder, including the family maids, Gaby's mother and daughter, and particularly her sister-in-law Pierette (Ardent) who arrives rather mysteriously and ominously in the middle of a snow storm. Bitter secrets including pregnancy, lesbianism and adultery are revealed as the women interrogate each other in their quest for the truth. The film, in French with English subtitles, won a number of awards in France including accolades for its production design and acting.
