UPDATE: Since directing and performing in the VDay LA production, Calpernia joined a well-known Hollywood academy and continues to study her passion, acting. Now in the final stages of Casting Pearls, the Deep Stealth short comedic film about being a trans actress, she can also be seen alongside Golden Globe-winning, Oscar-nominated actress Felicity Huffman in Transamerica. In addition to Beautiful Daughters, Calpernia has also appeared as co-host on The Reichen Show with Reichen Lehmkuhl, in episodes of CSI and Deadwood, and in the film Monster in Law. Calpernia can also be seen in the HBO documentary Middlesexes, American Justice and other informational programs.
Calpernia keeps busy by attending numerous charity events, speaking on campuses around the country, and appearing on radio programs such as NPR and Leeza Gibbons Live. In her spare time, she maintains Deep Stealth's suite of free transition websites that serve over three million visitors a year. Last year she traded her car for a classic motorcycle and any small moment of freedom is spent with the wind in her hair, riding the winding roads of Hollywood in search of the perfect coffee house.
BIO: From humble beginnings in the rural heartland of Tennessee, Calpernia Addams has worked hard to make her way in an often less-than-understanding world. After four years as a Navy combat medic, including service in Operation Desert Storm with the Marines, Calpernia returned home to Nashville and embarked upon a successful seven-year career as a theater actress. The tragic murder of her Army boyfriend, dramatized in the award-winning film Soldier's Girl, caused her to reevaluate her life and seek to make a difference in the world. The tragedy forced a national spotlight on transgender issues and the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy, and Calpernia left behind her artistic career to attend to the trial and personal matters.
After a meeting with Jane Fonda, Calpernia and business partner Andrea James were introduced to Eve Ensler, who suggested an all-trans cast performance of her play, The Vagina Monologues. Calpernia and Andrea ran with the idea, under direct mentorship of Eve and supporter Jane Fonda, both of whom attended the sold-out Hollywood performance at the Pacific Design Center. They raised over $11,000 for their beneficiaries, the NGLTF and the LA Commission on Assaults Against Women.
Calpernia now runs Deep Stealth Productions, Inc., with Andrea, a media production company committed to creating innovative entertainment and instructional media, inspired by and benefiting the transgender community. By providing the best original content possible, Deep Stealth intends to contribute positive examples against the tide of negative imagery and sentiment that keeps transgender people from having a voice in the world today. In addition to The Vagina Monologues, Deep Stealth has been involved in enriching the transgender storylines of four motion pictures currently in production, and provides more than 5000 pages of free original content on several websites for more than 1.5 million visitors annually. Calpernia herself has roles in all four of the films and hopes to provide at least one example of a productive, positive transwoman against the typical negative and biased Hollywood portrayals.
Calpernia has recently appeared in several television shows and can currently be seen alongside Felicity Huffman in Transamerica, a film on which she and Andrea also consulted in many capacities. Now splitting her time between working as an actress and businesswoman in Hollywood, she cherishes the opportunity of each new day and is still determined to make a difference.
