About the Show
The Two Cubas takes an intimate look at the lives of two gay men, close friends who have grown up under Fidel Castro's 40-plus year regime. For Cuban gays, much has changed since the 1960s when maricĒnes (effeminate gays) were held in contempt and often sent to work camps. Gradually, Cuban gays have carved out a place of their own, so much so that Cuba now ranks among the most liberal countries in Latin America with regards to gay and lesbian rights. The documentary deconstructs many of the assumptions around what it means to be gay in Cuba. In doing so, it uncovers a place where personal relationships are valued and where people have the opportunity to connect unmediated by market-driven preoccupations. The film looks at the strong family and personal bonds that sustain and strengthen gay culture and the heartbreak that results when a member of the family decides to leave.
