Q: What inspired you to make your film? Was there any specific reason you chose to make your film? How did you come up with the idea for your film?
Ajae: I had made the documentary, One in 2000, about intersex people. After hearing so many diverse stories and experiences around having an intersex body, the one thing that really stood out was the sense of isolation and betrayal-not being told the truth about ones body and the subsequent sense of isolation. Living in Texas with the endless dry fields of emptiness all around-it made me think about what it would be like to be a young boy growing up in rural Texas in the 50's and 60's and being different.
Q: What do you hope to convey through your film?
Ajae: I hope people see themselves in that we are all different in some way, and how important it is to embrace that.
Q: Who are your favorite filmmakers/what are a few of your favorite films and why?
Ajae: Lynne Ramsey and her film, Ratcatcher
The Lives of Others, Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck
Mysterious Skin Gregg Araki. I would say all of the above films have an authenticity and visual clarity and also a hint of humor. Images from all of the above films have stayed with me for years.
Q: Anything else you'd like to provide on your film?
Ajae: I am developing a feature narrative, not of the same story, but with a similar theme.
