Provincetown: When to Go This Summer

Provincetown is gay-popular year-round and increasingly open for business across the seasons, but summer's when the otherwise fairly sleepy seaside resort town really wakes up and sizzles. From mid-June to late August, in '08 there'll never be

more than a fortnight's stretch between major events, with a little something to please nearly every LGBT type under the salty Cape Cod sun.

Provincetown International Film Festival

The tenth incarnation of this very gay-friendly film fest honors Quentin Tarantino this year as its Filmmaker on the Edge; past recipients include John Waters, Christine Vachon, Gus Van Sant, Todd Haynes, Gregg Araki and Todd Solondz, all of whom have been invited to take part in the festival's 2008 anniversary celebration.

David Flower's Summer Camp

Traditionally one of Ptown's biggest gay party periods, the week surrounding the 4th of July is this year no exception. Included: a nightly DJ slate for Paramount's Independence Week, and the tenth anniversary cluster of David Flower's Summer Camp circuit events, featuring a July 2nd Sunset Boat Cruise, a July 3rd Late Night Boat Party, and a July 4th Pier Dance.

Bear Week

Already bear-friendly Ptown becomes one big happy furry den for a week, with parties including Woof on the Wharf at Boatslip Resort, Underbear Party and Crisco Disco at Club Purgatory, Bears at the A-House (two centuries old and gay for more than 50 years), and the Fireman's Ball, an annual fundraiser for the Provincetown Fireman's Association (woof, indeed).

Girl Splash

Ptown lesbian hotspot Girl Power this year introduces Girl Splash, the first women-centric beach extravaganza, with promoter Lynette Molar promising a frolicking seaside week plus of entertainment, pool parties, yacht sails, whale watches, clambakes, golf and beach volleyball.

Family Week

LGBTQ parenting rights group the Family Equality Council presents its annual roster of family-friendly events, this year featuring a July 29th Beach Picnic Under the Stars, an August 1st Community Pizza Party, and for the first time ever a full schedule of activities for children ages 3-8.

Carnival

The raucous highlight of the Ptown summer calendar, Carnival celebrates its 30 years in 2008 with a Wild, Wild West theme. The notoriously fun Carnival Parade goes down this year on August 21st, and the days surrounding it will bring a host of parties and gay-friendly entertainment that's previously included the likes of Cyndi Lauper, Deborah Cox and Bea Arthur.
